Most of Maria’s works are related with social issues and problems within a society. One of the projects called Family, focuses on the daily life inside families. Constructed scenes using film lights give a theatrical presentation of daily family life which are usually hidden from other people. Presenting two photographs on opposing pages of the book, Maria is by physical separation within the book showing the misunderstandings and non-communication happening in the families. Another project called Cure is about a relevant and current problem– alcoholism. The leaflet of AA program says: “There is no such thing as a cure for alcoholism. We can never return to normal drinking and our ability to stay away from alcohol depends on maintaining our physical, mental and spiritual health. This we can achieve by going to meetings regularly and putting into practice what we learn there”. That is the reason why Maria chose to focus on this program and on the places where the people meet regularly. There is no cure, but to stay sober together is one way to be cured, one way to live.
“All my projects come about from my own experiences and are a type of self-treatment. I hope my work helps make others think about our life in modern society”.
