Kate Smith is essentially a portrait artist, however there is usually something extraordinary happening too. For example in this series called Gemma and Nocky, it is about a little girl and her imaginary friend. She has taken a model in her 20s and constructed her as a child and constructed scenes with eerie spaces where her imaginary friend is suggested to exist. The use of empty spaces is a common theme in her work. She also uses portable lighting to light her subjects evenly, and the work was finally presented in a book. Smith likes to use the imagination of the viewer to create a direct dialogue between the work and the audience and is quite humorous in her intent.
